The remodeling industry has a very low barrier to entrance. Not much capital is required to start a business. Therefore many unqualified and unprepared enter the industry. And consequently horror stories abound of shoddy workmanship, unfinished jobs, unresponsiveness, and shady business practices. According to data by Dunn & Bradstreet, nearly 10,000 construction firms failed in 1999 leaving $1.5 billion in debt. That failure rate ranks 2nd only to the restaurant industry.

Sometimes this may not be intentional - the best craftsman with the best of intentions may lack business skills. He overextends himself, resulting in poor service and quality. He may not show up for months, not return phone calls, or never finish a project. But he had the best of intentions. Hence business failures, high turnover, and a black eye for the industry.

This environment offers a great opportunity for the remodeler who is responsive and chooses professionalism, ethics, quality and service, coupled with time-tested business systems. Therefore my Code of Conduct is as follows:
  1. Return all phone call within 24 hours.
  2. Only hire the best craftsmen, treat them with respect, pay them above prevailing wages, and on time.
  3. Be on time for appointments or call to reschedule if late or unable to attend.
  4. Be truthful, even if it hurts.
  5. Keep your customers' needs in mind - design and build their project, not yours.
  6. Keep customers updated weekly of job schedules including estimated start and completion dates.
  7. Pay all bills on time.
  8. Perform warranty work within 2 weeks of when informed.
  9. Keep pricing margins consistent.
  10. Clean up job sites by the end of the day.
  11. Inform customers of delays as soon as notified.
  12. Insure employees are courteous to homeowners at all times.
  13. All changes must be in writing.
  14. Build a high quality product - insist on this from employees and crews.
  15. Build what's in the contract - put everything in writing.
  16. Strive to build within budget and on time.
  17. Always dress and speak professionally.
  18. Treat a customer's home with care and always act as a respectful guest.
  19. Carry liability and worker's compensation insurance. Ensure that subcontractors are also covered.
  20. Share realistic lead times with the customer at the signing of the contract.
